6 Blockchain Companies That Are Taking Down Big Brother

Wed Aug 15, 2018 9:45 am

Ever since George Orwell’s seminal work 1984 coined the term “Big Brother,” even people who live in the most openly democratic societies have used the term as an accusation against any government monitoring they find too invasive, even if it might be a long way off from the brutally oppressive surveillance described in the original book.

Those of us lucky enough to live in relatively free, democratic countries often feel that part of the point of government is to create an environment in which we don’t feel its restrictions. From that point of view, almost any government involvement in our identity or daily activities feels unwelcome.

In our increasingly technologically interconnected world, it’s not just governments that people want to keep out of their private lives. More and more, private corporations are collecting data on all of us, by teasing it out of us in return for using social networks and content services, or by passively tracking our activities and mining our data for revealing trends.

Many modern companies hold more data on private citizens than many of the most oppressive regimes of the past could have ever hoped for.

While most people strike a balance between received services and giving up some privacy, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. There is nothing inherent in the way the internet works that says access and convenience must come at the cost of privacy and control.

It’s all in how the technology is made manifest, and with blockchain technology, it might be possible to get some of the best of all worlds — complete control over our personal data, freedom to see and do what we want, while keeping our privacy and security.

Here are 6 projects that seek to enable such a world, free from the peering eye of Big Brother.
